The Union of Brest

In 1596 at Brest, part of the Orthodox eparchies of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth entered into union with Rome. This formed a Greek Catholic (Uniate) church that retained the Eastern rite while acknowledging the pope's supreme authority. The union produced a long and deep split between Uniates and Orthodox in the Ukrainian and Belarusian lands. Its consequences were felt for centuries.
