The execution of Patriarch Gregory V of Constantinople

During the Greek uprising against Ottoman rule, the Ottoman authorities accused Patriarch Gregory V of Constantinople of aiding the rebels. In 1821 they hanged him at the gates of the patriarchate. The execution became a symbol of the persecution of the Orthodox Church under Ottoman rule.
