Balkan Orthodox churches gaining autocephaly

Over the course of the 19th century, the Balkan nations gained independence from the Ottoman Empire. As they did, the churches of Serbia, Greece, Romania and Bulgaria one after another achieved autocephaly – ecclesiastical independence from the Patriarchate of Constantinople. The process accompanied the rise of Balkan national consciousness and political liberation.
